Publishers Description: When Cosgrove was growing up in the then working-class Sydney suburb of Paddington, people like him didn't become governor-general. Until 1965, when Lord De L'Isle retired, almost all who held the post were British aristocrats, among them three viscounts, two earls and a prince. They had butlers and chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royces. There's still a Roller in the Government House garage - a 1970 Phantom VI - but Cosgrove is conveyed to most of his appointments in a Holden Caprice, with the vice-regal flag fluttering from the bonnet. Cosgrove burst into the national consciousness in 1999, when he led a successful mission to restore peace to East Timor during its transition to independence from Indonesia. On television, he came across as a new kind of military man. Genial. Straight-talking. Easy to like. He was promoted to chief of army, then to head of the entire defence force, succeeding Chris Barrie, who describes him to me as "an uncomplicated sort of person ... a do-er, rather than a thinker". Barrie says. "He is not an intellect. You'll never have an intellectual conversation with Peter." But the retired admiral points out that Cosgrove has other gifts. "His emotional intelligence is acutely wired. His ability to get on with people in all walks of life is just terrific." Find out why Peter was voted one of the most admired leaders in distant and recent memory.
