Publishers Description: This is the story of the American Civil War cavalry battle that took place at Trevilian Station, Virginia in June 1864, as well as the ordeal of Sheridans second cavalry raid. After the ferocious fighting at Cold Harbor, Virginia, Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his cavalry, commanded by Major General Philip H. Sheridan, to distract the Confederate forces opposing the Army of the Potomac. Eric Wittenberg chronicles the battle that resulted when Confederate cavalry pursued and caught their Federal foes at Trevilian Station, which was, perhaps, the only truly decisive cavalry battle of the Civil War. Wittenberg tells the stories of the men who fought there, including eight Union Medal of Honour winners and one Confederate whose death at Trevilian Station made him the third of three brothers to die in the service of Company A of the 4th Virginia Cavalry. The book also addresses the little-known but critical cavalry battle at Samaria (St Marys) Church on June 24th 1864, where Union Brig Gen David M. Greggs division was nearly destroyed. The study features appendices that outline the order of battle, strengths and losses on both sides. As a modern strategic analysis of the battle, it challenges prevailing interpretations of the Union cavalry and of General Sheridan. Eric Wittenberg shows that the outcome of Trevilian Station ultimately prolonged Grants efforts to end the Civil War.
