Publishers Description: Fighting for Britain 1937 - 1946 The eagerly awaited final volume of Robert Skidelskys magisterial biography of John Maynard Keyes. - Nobody who wants to understand one of the most extraordinary Englishmen of his time can do without this biography - E. J. Hobsbawm - It is the mark of extraordinary scope and intelligence and insight of (the) book that one looks forward to the next volume not only as a continuation of the skilfully told story, but as a commentary on matters still of vital interest today - Nicholas Mosely Industry Reviews This is the third and final work in Professor Skidelskys biography of one of the most famous and influential economists of our times, John Maynard Keynes. The work is vast in scope and detail, a tour de force in terms of appreciation of the subject. Volume 3 focuses on Keyness contribution to the war effort and the rebuilding of post-war Britain. Despite the fact he suffered with a bad heart one feels that he was, in fact, battling to save all that the country stood for, not just dealing with the economic fragilities of the time. Arduous negotiations with the USA - was entertaining the idea of forming a grand alliance with the Soviet Union - aggravated his physical condition. Like all excellent biographers, Skidelsky delves deep into the influences and motivation which drove Keynes. The book also reveals the charming and quirky qualities of his devoted wife, Lydia, who nursed him. She would sunbathe naked among the redcurrant bushes within a few yards of a footpath causing disbelief rather than embarrassment to those who passed, and after Keynes died, when she was 53, she became increasingly eccentric. It is said of Keynes that he gave his life for his country as surely as if he had fallen on the field of battle. The book does both Keynes and his biographer proud. Despite the fact this is a weighty tome, its immensely readable. (Kirkus UK)
