Publishers Description: A biography of one of Australias most senior soliders. Lavarack served in World War I, was Head of the Australian Army from 1935 to 1949 and voluntarily dropped rank so he could go to war in World War II. He was man of fiery personality, and also of many accomplishments: intelligent; well-read, professional and courageous; and the first allied commander to defeat Rommel. However, Field-Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey saw Lavarack as a rival. In the 1940s, the Australian army at war had become Blameys personal kingdom. He perceived Lavarack as a threat to the throne and succeeded in putting an end to Lavaracks career.
