Publishers Description: GREAT AUSTRALIAN HISTORY, FROM CAMEL TRAIN TO AEROPLANE, COMES ALIVE IN THIS BOOK, AS DOES THE LIVES OF PIONEERING MEN AND WOMEN WHO MADE THAT HISTORY. IT CAPTURES THE VERY WARMTH AND FEEL OF A WIDE BROWN LAND KNOWN AS "THE TERRITORY", WHERE THE ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURES OF COLOURFUL CHARACTERS WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE WERE IT NOT FOR THE MANY HISTORIC PHOTOGTAPHS AND ANICDOTES IN THESE PAGES. Jones Store, my childhood home, was built in 1934 from rustic bush timber, mud floors, mud walls and corrugated iron. It soon became the centre of social activity for the tiny heritage listed town of Newcastle Waters. The town is situated at the junction of Australias great northern cattle stock routs on the banks of Longreach Waterhole, which was located by explorer John McDouall Stuart in 1861.It is where the Mudburra and Jingili tribal Aboriginal peoples land meet and where surrounding tribes gather for ceremony. In 1988, Australias Bicentennial year, Jones Store was formally opened by me on behalf of the National Trust of Australia as an important historical building. The building represents a unique form of vernacular outback architecture and bush craftsmanship.
