Publishers Description: A detailed account of Waldheim's career, focusing on his wartime service and possible involvement in war crimes, attempting to answer the questions and contradictions in his account. Describes his upbringing in a conservative Catholic family, political developments and antisemitism in Austria during the 1930s, and his membership in the Nazi Party and in the SA. Discusses his possible knowledge of the deportation of the Greek Jews. Waldheim's past was known to both the Yugoslavs and the Austrian government by 1971 despite his attempt to conceal it in official biographies which claimed that his war service ended in 1942. Persistent rumors about it continued, picked up by his socialist rivals and by the World Jewish Congress in 1985 when he stood for election as president of Austria. Discusses the author's part in locating evidence to prove that Waldheim had lied about his past. Regards Waldheim as a bureaucratic accessory after the crime rather than a war criminal.
